Areas of Interest:

Dr. Chao has interest in the following research areas: (1) identification of prognostic biomarkers for cancer disease progression; (2) treatment adverse events among cancer patients; (3) long-term outcomes among cancer survivors; and (4) Utilization of HPV vaccine. Currently, I am leading several cancer epidemiology projects at Kaiser Permanente Southern California (KPSC), with an emphasis on non-Hodgkin lymphoma and HIV-related malignancies. I am particularly interested in the area of tissue based research as well as patient outcomes. In my project of HIV-related diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, we performed tissue microassay and IHC staining to investigate the prognostic significance of several viral markers, cell cycle regulators and anti-apoptotic proteins, utilizing the comprehensive clinical information available at KPSC. Several of my other studies also focused on cancer patient outcomes. For example, in one study we examined clinical predictors for cancer survival outcomes among patients with HIV. In another study, we examined the associations between chronic co-morbidities and risk of chemotherapy-induced febrile neutropenia. Recently, in collaboration with City of Hope, we have completed a cervical cancer survivorship study in which we recruited and administer psychosocial interventions to cervical cancer survivors. My other studies aim at studying the risk/protective factors for cancer development and progression, including the role of certain dietary intake, pharmacological agents and immunomodulation. For example, an on-going R01 study for which I serve as the KPSC site PI investigates the potential protective effect of statins on risk of lymphoid malignancies. I am committed to dedicate my career to cancer research with the goal to improve the outcomes of cancer patients as well as cancer prevention.
